Spring is on it's way and the DIY season is upon us!
Every Spring-time I start thinking about:
- Gardening. I don't have a garden and usually kill my houseplants off by accident within a couple of months.
- Decorating. No one has ever been able to teach me how to clean a paint brush properly, so I have ended up with a big box of manky & useless brushes I can't bring myself to throw away.
- Putting up shelves where no shelves have existed before. The walls don't want the shelves to go there, that's why I have a wall full of badly drilled and now badly filled holes, and a selection of brackets, shelf-sets and rustic planks that would 'make lovely features if I just sanded and varnished them'.
I've also got a whole heap of powertools I don't know how to use and two, yep TWO, toolbelts, which I can't wear because my hubby laughs at me when I do.
It's a funny thing, but I really don't mind. In fact, I actually enjoy all my failed or half-completed projects, because they're mine, and I embarked upon them in my own house.
It's such a relief to have an outlet when I get the annual DIY urge, and know that it's not going to mean I forfeit the deposit on a rented shoebox of a flat. I urge you to go out there, find the home you want and buy it with Joint Equity!
...On reflection, because I do have pride in the home that I own, I find myself finishing more jobs than I leave unfinished, and my little housie is slowly becoming the comfortable refuge I want it to be - and I could never say that of any of the flats I've rented.
Here's hoping that Spring is reaching you too.
